Bioremediation

Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi to remove or neutralize contaminants in polluted soil or water. These microorganisms produce enzymes that transform contaminants into harmless by-products such as carbon dioxide, water, and additional cellular material. Bioremediation of petroleum contamination for example, can be efficiently accomplished by adding large numbers of selected petrophilic (oil-loving) microorganisms to the contaminated soil or water. This approach is known as bio-augmentation.

Common Problems

Hydrocarbon waste has become a major environmental issue. It can be found in soil (from leaking underground storage tanks), industrial lagoons, groundwater, oil/water separators and wastewater treatment plants. Traditional treatments for petroleum contamination are becoming increasingly expensive, and they don’t eliminate the contamination or liability.

Solution

EmTec-HC is a live, synergistic blend of all-natural bacteria, specifically chosen for their ability to metabolize hydrocarbons such as: gasoline, oil, diesel and BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene). Aromatic compounds such as phenolics are also digested. The organisms in EmTec-HC are classified as BioSafety Level 1 organisms, the safest rating. Additionally, these organisms are:

  • Naturally occurring - natural bacteria, endemic to the earth, not genetically engineered
  • Non-pathogenic - do not cause disease
  • Non-opportunistic - do not cause disease in a compromised host
